APCSM Adoption Process
-
View our shelter animals to see who is available for adoption.
You’ll find information on each pet by clicking on their picture.
Our website is updated automatically as animals become available, so please check back regularly.
-
Please visit our center on Tue, Thurs, Fri, Sat or Sun between 1-4 PM.
We are located at 1300 West Elm St Extension in Brockton, MA. This street connects Pearl St. in Brockton with Washington St. in Easton. We have a long driveway and the building is not visible from the road.
If you’d like to speak to a staff member about a particular animal before visiting, please call 508-586-2053 or email info@apcsm.org.
Note: an adoption inquiry is not a hold, reservation, or guarantee on pet adoption.
-
Dogs: You'll have the opportunity to take the dog for a walk outside, rain or shine. This helps you assess how the dog responds on a leash, around people, and potentially around other animals — and helps our team assess how you interact with each other.
Cats & Small Animals: You'll spend one-on-one time in a quiet office to get acquainted. For more nervous animals, we may have you meet them in their cage to reduce the stress of being moved into an unfamiliar space.
Please don’t hesitate to ask questions - that's why we're here!
-
After meeting an animal and deciding you’d like to adopt, our team will ask you to complete a brief adoption application.
An adoption counselor will then speak with you about the specific needs of the animal you’ve chosen and how they may fit into your home and lifestyle.
If you are adopting a Small Animal (guinea pig, bird, mouse, etc.), you will need to provide a photo of the enclosure you plan to use.
-
Time to make it official! Your adoption counselor will guide you through the final steps of the process, including completing payment, reviewing medical records, sharing behavioral tips, and answering any remaining questions.
If you are adopting a cat, kitten, or small animal, please bring a secure carrier to safely transport them home.
A collar and leash will be provided to you if you are adopting a dog.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
All adoption applications must be completed in person at the APCSM at the time of adoption.
If you live out of state and would like to adopt, please contact us.
-
The length of the adoption process can vary based on several factors, including how many animals you choose to meet, how many questions you have, and the specific needs of the animal you're interested in.
Additionally, our staffing capacity - especially on busy weekends - can impact wait times, as we do our best to balance multiple priorities with a small team. We appreciate your patience and understanding. You're always welcome to call ahead to check on expected wait times.
-
Please bring a valid photo ID.
If you are adopting a Small Animal (guinea pig, bird, mouse, etc.), you will need to provide a photo of the enclosure you plan to use.
If you have other pets at home, we prefer that they are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. Please bring documentation from your veterinarian that confirms their vaccine and spay/neuter status.
-
We strongly prefer—and in some cases require—that all members of the household meet the animal you’re considering adopting.
Every person has different expectations, preferences, and comfort levels when it comes to animals, and it’s important to make sure the match works for everyone.
-
If you’re adopting a dog or guinea pig, we’ll schedule a meet-and-greet with your current pets at the shelter to ensure a good fit.
For cats, birds, or other small animals, in-shelter introductions aren’t required. We do recommend slow, supervised introductions at home.
We prefer that your current pets are up to date on vaccinations and receive regular or semi-regular vet care.
-
We want every adoption to be a safe, thoughtful, and lifelong match for both the adopter and the animal. In some cases, we may deny an adoption if:
We believe the animal’s needs are not a good fit for your current home environment.
Your landlord or housing situation does not permit pets.
There is a history of neglect, abuse, or repeated surrender of animals.
You are not able or willing to meet the animal’s physical, emotional, or medical needs (e.g., needing daily exercise or enrichment, requiring a special diet or medication, needing time to adjust in a quiet environment, not being comfortable around young children or other animals).
An individual is verbally abusive, threatening, or disrespectful toward staff.
These guidelines are in place to protect the well-being of both our animals and our team, and to ensure that every adoption is set up for success. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
-
We are currently open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1-4 PM.
We are closed on Mondays & Wednesdays.

It’s a question we get often. The short answer is yes — and no. We welcome visitors who are interested in learning more about our services and meeting the animals available for adoption, especially during special events like our bake sale or donation drives.
However, due to our small staff and limited space, we need to prioritize guests who are seriously considering adoption that day.
While we understand the desire to spend one-on-one time with our animals, please keep in mind that we have limited private spaces available for meet-and-greets. We kindly ask that these rooms be reserved for individuals or families who are seriously considering adoption, so our animals have the best chance of finding a home.
When an animal spends time with someone who isn’t ready to adopt, it may take away an opportunity for them to connect with someone who is.
Thank you for understanding and helping us give these animals the best chance at finding a loving home.
